A former fire chief and treasurer of the Marbletown Volunteer Fire Department has been arrested and charged with grand larceny after allegedly misusing department funds for personal expenses.
State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli, Wayne County District Attorney Christine Callanan, and the New York State Police announced the arrest of William Storrs on charges of stealing $101,000 from the department over a four-year period.
According to investigators, Storrs allegedly used his positions within the fire department to make unauthorized transactions from department accounts. Between January 2020 and July 2024, he is accused of using department debit cards and making direct payments from department funds for personal expenses, including payments to his wife’s credit card and purchases from various retailers.
Authorities said the alleged theft was discovered when a department member attempted to use a debit card for an authorized purchase and found the account had insufficient funds. The fire department then reported the suspicious activity to law enforcement, prompting an investigation by the State Comptroller’s Office and New York State Police.
Following the allegations, Storrs was removed as fire chief and suspended from the department. He was arrested and arraigned in Wayne County Centralized Arraignment Part Court. Storrs is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
