Winter Storm Watch Issued for Wayne and Northern Cayuga Counties: Heavy Snow and Hazardous Conditions Expected
The National Weather Service (NWS) in Buffalo has issued a Winter Weather Advisory and Winter Storm Watch for Wayne and northern Cayuga counties, warning of significant snow accumulation, gusty winds, and hazardous travel conditions over the next several days.
The Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 1 a.m. Monday, with additional snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches expected, along with ice accumulation up to one-tenth of an inch. Wind gusts could reach up to 50 mph Sunday afternoon and evening, creating the potential for blowing snow and reduced visibility.
The Winter Storm Watch will take effect late Sunday night and continue through late Tuesday night, particularly affecting northeastern Wayne and northern Cayuga counties. During this period, heavy lake-effect snow is possible, with total accumulations of 8 to 16 inches in areas experiencing the most persistent snowfall. Winds could again gust as high as 50 mph Monday and Monday night, leading to blowing and drifting snow that may cause whiteout conditions and hazardous travel.
Drivers are urged to exercise caution as periods of snow, sleet, and freezing rain will make roads slick and reduce visibility. Travel could become nearly impossible in some areas, especially during times of intense snowfall and strong winds. The Monday morning and evening commutes may be significantly affected by these hazardous conditions.
The NWS advises residents to be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions. Lake-effect snow can create highly variable weather patterns, with conditions ranging from heavy snow and near-zero visibility to clear skies just a few miles away.
Motorists are reminded to slow down and remain alert for changing road conditions. Bridges and overpasses will likely become particularly slippery.
The NWS encourages the public to submit reports of snow and ice through its website or social media channels.
