The Williamson Water Department is requesting assistance from local property owners to identify the materials used in their water service lines as part of a federally mandated inventory effort. Letters have been sent to residents whose service line materials remain unknown.
A service line is the pipe connecting a home or building to the water main. When the material of any portion of the service line is unverified, it must be classified as "lead status unknown." Until the service line material is confirmed, the department will continue providing annual information about lead in drinking water as a precautionary measure.
Property owners who receive a letter are asked to report their service line material using the online form available on the Town of Williamson website (town.williamson.ny.us) or by contacting the Water Department at (315) 589-3781 to schedule an inspection. Residents may also complete and submit a Water Service Line Inventory Form along with a photo of their service line.
According to health officials, exposure to lead in drinking water can pose serious risks, particularly for infants and children, potentially affecting IQ, attention span, and behavior. Lead can enter drinking water through lead service lines, plumbing materials, and certain fixtures.
The Williamson Water Department appreciates the cooperation of residents who have already submitted their information. The health department requires that letters be periodically mailed until responses are received.
