Wayne County Sheriff's Office Observes National School Resource Officer Appreciation Day
School Resource Officers are sworn law enforcement officers who work in educational settings to help maintain safety while also building relationships with students, staff, and the community.
Wayne County joined communities across the nation on February 15, 2025, to recognize and celebrate the vital role of School Resource Officers (SROs) in ensuring student safety and fostering positive environments in local schools. The Wayne County Sheriff's Office took the opportunity to acknowledge the dedication and hard work of its team of SROs who serve across the county.
School Resource Officers are sworn law enforcement officers who work in educational settings to help maintain safety while also building relationships with students, staff, and the community. Beyond their law enforcement duties, SROs act as mentors, educators, and trusted allies for students, promoting not only security but also a sense of connection and support.
"These officers work tirelessly to keep our schools and communities safe," said the Wayne County Sheriff's Office in a statement. "We are proud to recognize their important contributions today and every day."
Wayne County’s SROs are stationed at various schools throughout the county, where they are involved in safety planning, crisis intervention, and community engagement initiatives. The Sheriff's Office expressed its gratitude for their commitment to student well-being and their efforts to create a secure and welcoming environment for all.
Established in 2022 by the National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO), this annual day of recognition falls on February 15 to coincide with the academic year and to honor the birthdate of Archie Hodge, a NASRO founding member. NASRO encourages schools and communities to acknowledge the valuable work of SROs, who serve as informal mentors, educators, and law enforcement officers, bridging gaps between youth and law enforcement.
