Wayne County Seeks Typist for Mental Health Department Through HELP Program
Wayne County is actively recruiting for a temporary typist position at the Wayne County Mental Health Department through the state’s Emergency Limited Placement (HELP) program. The program allows qualifying candidates to bypass the traditional civil service examination process in an effort to quickly fill vacant public service positions.
The role, classified as competitive, offers a starting salary of $37,153 annually, or $18.98 per hour. The position comes with full benefits, including paid holidays, tuition assistance, regular contractual raises, and enrollment in the New York State Retirement System.
Under the HELP program, individuals hired into qualifying roles can attain permanent status after six months of satisfactory service and successful completion of the Qualified Incumbent Examination. No written exam is initially required, but applicants must still meet the position's minimum qualifications and be eligible to work in Wayne, Monroe, Ontario, Seneca, or Cayuga counties. Candidates must have lived in one of these counties for at least one month prior to the March 26 posting date.
Minimum Qualifications for Typist:
Candidates must meet one of the following:
A high school diploma or equivalent;
Two years of clerical experience involving typing;
Or an equivalent combination of the above education and experience.

Job Duties:
Responsibilities include routine clerical work and consistent use of a typewriter or keyboard. Typical tasks involve typing reports, forms, invoices, and other materials; maintaining records; basic arithmetic computations; and assisting with phones or public-facing duties when necessary. The position may also involve using computers or word processing software, with training provided as needed.
