Wayne County Public Safety Committee Prepares for March Meeting
District Attorney Christine Callanan is expected to seek approval to set the salary and fill a vacant full-time Assistant District Attorney position and other key issues are on the schedule.
The Wayne County Public Safety Committee is set to convene on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, at 9:00 a.m., to discuss a range of issues related to emergency services, law enforcement, and public safety initiatives in the county.
The meeting will begin with the approval of minutes from the previous session before moving into an executive session to review the employment history of a specific individual or corporation.
Several county officials and department heads are scheduled to present reports and proposals for committee review:
EMS Advisory Board: Representatives Paul Harkness and Mike Catalano will introduce key updates regarding emergency medical services.
County Administrator Rick House: A resolution will be presented to amend a prior agreement related to legal research services.
Law Enforcement and Legal Departments: The committee will hear updates from the Coroner’s Office, Probation Department, Pre-Trial Services, and the District Attorney’s Office.

Public Defender Andy Correia will discuss an out-of-state travel request and propose funding for overlap training during a personnel transition.
Sheriff Robert Milby will present monthly reports and several resolutions, including:
Contract Amendments: Proposed funding increases for a legal research contract with Thomson Reuters.
Public Safety Upgrades: Renewal of contracts with Motorola and Intrado for 911 call processing and text-to-911 services.
Technology and Equipment Improvements: Authorization to enter an agreement with Black Creek Integrated Systems for battery backup replacement at the county jail.
Public Safety Grants: Acceptance of state grant funding for Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) operations.
Facility Upgrades: A request for additional funding to complete a jail dental chair installation project.
George Bastedo, Director of Emergency Management, will present updates on public safety preparedness, including:
Authorization to purchase Meridian Rapid Defense Barriers using grant funds.
Application for hazard mitigation grants to support infrastructure and disaster preparedness efforts.
Additionally, Fire Coordinator Jeremiah Shufelt and EMS Director Jim Lee will provide reports on fire safety and emergency medical services. Lee is also expected to propose a clinical affiliation agreement with Erie County to enhance EMT and paramedic training opportunities.
The committee will also discuss upcoming training programs, including Citizen Preparedness Corps training and exercises related to the Ginna Nuclear Power Plant’s emergency response plans.
The Wayne County Public Safety Committee’s actions and decisions during this session will shape the county’s approach to law enforcement, emergency response, and public safety investments for the coming year.
