The Wayne County Mental Health Department has announced an opening for a Substance Abuse Counselor, a role dedicated to providing support, counseling, and guidance to individuals struggling with addiction. The position, which will be filled provisionally, offers a salary of $61,132 annually ($31.23 per hour) along with a comprehensive benefits package.
According to the county's Human Resources Department, applicants must meet specific residency requirements, having lived in Wayne, Monroe, Ontario, Seneca, or Cayuga counties for at least one month before applying. The role will be filled provisionally pending a future Civil Service Exam.
The position requires candidates to hold a New York State Certified Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) certification and meet one of several educational qualifications, including a Master’s, Bachelor’s, or Associate’s degree in related fields such as counseling, psychology, social work, nursing, or human services. Those with an OASAS-approved 350-hour certification program and additional required training are also eligible to apply.
The counselor will work within various substance use prevention and treatment programs, assisting clients through screening, intake, and diagnostic assessments. Responsibilities include individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, developing treatment plans, and maintaining client progress reports. The role may also involve outreach efforts to engage the community, educate the public on available services, and support individuals in addiction recovery.
