Wayne County Hiring Public Safety Dispatcher Trainees
The Wayne County Human Resources Department is currently accepting applications for Public Safety Dispatcher Trainee positions through the county’s HELP Program, a temporary initiative aimed at expediting the hiring process for essential positions by waiving the standard civil service examination requirements.
The HELP Program allows qualified candidates to enter certain job roles more quickly while still adhering to minimum qualifications and other employment conditions. Employees hired through this program will be eligible for permanent appointment after completing a one-year probationary period and will receive competitive class status without having to take the civil service exam.
Position Details
The Public Safety Dispatcher Trainee position is based at the Wayne County E-911 Department and offers a starting salary of $52,346 per year ($25.07 per hour) for 2025. This role involves extensive training in emergency communications, including receiving emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatching law enforcement and emergency services, and operating multiple computer and radio systems.
The 911 Center operates 24/7, requiring dispatchers to work flexible shifts, including mandatory and voluntary overtime. Candidates must be legal residents of Wayne, Monroe, Ontario, Seneca, or Cayuga counties for at least one month prior to applying.
Minimum Qualifications & Job Responsibilities
Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent and be able to obtain and maintain various certifications, including Public Safety Telecommunicator (PST), Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD), and a CPR certification.

Handling emergency and non-emergency calls
Dispatching law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical services
Monitoring responder safety
Operating computer-aided dispatch systems
Performing clerical tasks and maintaining records
