The Wayne County Economic Development and Planning Committee met on Wednesday, March 5, to discuss several initiatives aimed at strengthening the county’s economic and environmental landscape. Among the key topics were tourism, solid waste management, agricultural development, and infrastructure planning.
The committee considered a resolution to support the nomination and management of the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad New York Scenic Byway. This proposed 544-mile route would highlight significant locations related to Tubman’s efforts in the Underground Railroad, offering historical and cultural value while promoting regional tourism. The committee discussed how the designation could bring funding opportunities and encourage municipal collaboration along the route.
Several members of the Wayne County Planning Board were reappointed for new terms. The committee confirmed that representatives from Arcadia, Ontario, Palmyra, Sodus, and Macedon had been recommended by their respective municipalities and would continue to serve in their roles.
The committee addressed the need for re-appropriating funds related to the county’s solid waste management plan. Due to delays in finalizing the plan following feedback from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the committee approved the reallocation of $6,441.45 to ensure the project's completion.
A proposal to modify Agricultural District No. 1 was reviewed, allowing for the inclusion of additional farmland in the Town of Savannah. The committee noted that the modification aligns with state legislation permitting landowners to request inclusion in agricultural districts outside the standard eight-year review cycle. A required environmental review determined no significant adverse effects from the change.
The committee authorized the county to apply for funding through the Empire State Development County Infrastructure Grant Program. With up to $1 million available per applicant, the program aims to support infrastructure improvements that facilitate housing and economic development. The county’s Economic Development and Planning Department is working with municipalities to identify a qualifying project before the April 1 application deadline.
