Syracuse Man Rescued After Becoming Trapped in Ice at Sodus Point
According to the Sheriff's Office, Joshua Hershfield had been surfing near the old lighthouse in Sodus Point about an hour before sunset when waves trapped him against an ice wall.
A Syracuse man was rescued Sunday evening after becoming stranded in icy waters near 8th Street in the Village of Sodus Point.
According to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, Joshua Hershfield had been surfing near the old lighthouse in Sodus Point about an hour before sunset when waves pushed him against an ice wall, trapping him. Unable to free himself, he called for help. Nearby residents heard his calls and alerted emergency services.
The Sodus Point Fire Department and the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene. Firefighters were able to reach Hershfield and pull him to safety before additional emergency personnel arrived.
Hershfield, who was wearing a dry suit designed for cold-water conditions, was evaluated at the scene by Silver Waters Community Ambulance. He was released with no reported injuries. Wayne County EMS and the Alton Fire Department also assisted in the response.
