Authorities have identified a suspect in connection with a shooting at the Maine Mall on Wednesday, February 5, 2025. Law enforcement officials are actively searching for Ahmed Basheer Awad, 20, of Westbrook, who is considered armed and dangerous.
The South Portland Police Department (SPPD) has issued a warrant for Awad on charges of Elevated Aggravated Assault, a Class A felony, and anticipates additional charges as the investigation continues. Authorities believe Awad is no longer in Maine, though his whereabouts remain unknown. South Portland Police Chief Daniel J. Ahern stated that he believes Awad is living out of his car, based on early investigative findings. The Chief also stated that he could not answer questions at this time pertaining to if Awad acted alone or has potential help from other suspects.
Chief Ahern believes the mall shooting which left one hospitalized was an isolated incident and does not present a greater threat to the public. However, he stressed that the suspect should be considered armed and dangerous. All SPPD units responded to the shooting and were assisted by officers from neighboring departments including Portland, Scarborough, Cape Elizabeth, Yarmouth, Gorham, Westbrook, State Police, Cumberland County Sheriffs, ATF, and FBI.
SPPD is urging the public to provide any information regarding Awad’s location or details about the incident. Individuals can contact Detective Lieutenant Christopher Todd at 207-799-5511 Ext. 7448 or Detective Jeff Levesque at 207-799-5511 Ext. 7435. Anonymous tips can also be submitted via 207-347-4100.
Authorities caution the public not to approach Awad if spotted and instead to contact law enforcement immediately.
