A Steuben County man was arrested Saturday night following a domestic incident that led to the discovery of a firearm, according to New York State Police.
Troopers responded to a residence on Sprague Road around 9:03 p.m. on February 16 after receiving a report of a dispute. Upon arrival, they spoke with 33-year-old Samuel K. Byler, who had contacted authorities, claiming that the other individual involved had refused to leave his home.
During their investigation, police determined that earlier in the day, Byler had allegedly pointed a sawed-off shotgun at the individual and prevented them from leaving the residence. Officers later recovered a break-action shotgun with an 18-inch barrel behind the home.
Byler was taken into custody and charged with criminal contempt in the first degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, menacing in the second degree, and unlawful imprisonment in the second degree.
Following processing at the State Police barracks in Painted Post, Byler was transported to the Steuben County Jail. He was scheduled for arraignment in CAP Court on February 17 at 8 a.m.
Authorities have not released additional details regarding the circumstances of the incident or the status of the victim.
