Law enforcement agencies in New York State will take part in a statewide effort to curb impaired driving during St. Patrick’s Day weekend. The initiative, part of the STOP-DWI High Visibility Engagement Campaign, will run from March 13 to March 18, 2025.
Local police agencies and STOP-DWI coordinators will participate in special enforcement efforts aimed at reducing impaired driving incidents. St. Patrick’s Day weekend is historically associated with an increase in alcohol-related crashes due to celebrations and high traffic volumes.
The campaign is a collaborative effort involving New York State Police, sheriff’s offices, municipal law enforcement agencies, and STOP-DWI programs across the state. The goal is to reduce the number of injuries and fatalities linked to impaired driving.
This initiative is part of a broader statewide strategy organized by STOP-DWI NY and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee. Similar high-visibility enforcement efforts are conducted during other major holidays and events, including Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, the holiday season, and the Super Bowl.
Officials encourage residents to plan ahead and arrange for a sober ride home to prevent impaired driving. The STOP-DWI program also promotes the use of the “Have a Plan” mobile app, which helps users find transportation alternatives.
