Statewide Celebration of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Legacy
A statewide broadcast titled “We Press On: New York State Celebrates the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.” will air on PBS stations starting MLK weekend and stream online.
Governor Kathy Hochul has announced New York State’s annual commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and legacy, which will be aired as a statewide broadcast titled “We Press On: New York State Celebrates the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.” The program will air on PBS stations starting MLK weekend and stream at empirestateplaza.ny.gov/nyking.

Coordinated by the New York State Office of General Services (OGS), the tribute features a range of people and organizations whose work honors Dr. King’s principles. The program will highlight artistic and cultural contributions, including a performance by Vogue Buffalo and a profile on food historian Von Diaz. The Hamilton Hill Arts Center in Schenectady, which promotes African Diaspora arts, will also be featured.
For those wishing to celebrate in person, a special screening of the documentary will be held on Friday, January 17, at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center in Albany. Hosted by Deshanna C. Wiggins of the Albany Black Chamber of Commerce, the event will begin at 6:30 p.m., with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, with complimentary refreshments and free parking available after 4 p.m.
Jeanette Moy, Commissioner of the NYS Office of General Services, emphasized the importance of reflecting on Dr. King’s philosophy. “I hope this celebration inspires us all to press on and persevere in the pursuit of justice,” she said.
