Sneaking a Kiss at the Canandaigua Pier? Say Cheese for the New Cameras!
If passed, the $105,325.75 proposal in Canandaigua would install up to 15 new surveillance cameras at Kershaw Park, Lakefront Park, and the City Pier.
If you’ve been sneaking off to the Canandaigua City Pier for a romantic, secluded moment, you might want to think twice—because soon, someone might be watching.
The Canandaigua City Council is set to vote on January 27 on a proposal to install up to 15 new surveillance cameras at Kershaw Park, Lakefront Park, and the City Pier. The project, which comes with a price tag of $105,325.75, would be funded through a state law enforcement grant and expand the city’s existing downtown camera system.
While city officials insist the cameras are meant to enhance security and assist in reviewing past incidents, they might also put an end to the pier’s reputation as a quiet, out-of-the-way date night destination. As tourism and foot traffic increase along the waterfront, the cameras are expected to help police keep an extra eye on things—not just young couples sneaking a kiss, but any suspicious activity that could arise.
The good news? These cameras won’t be used for traffic enforcement, and they won’t be zooming in for a “Kiss Cam” moment. But if you’re planning a secret smooch by the water, just know—privacy at the pier might soon be a thing of the past.
