Seneca County Sheriff Warns of Real Estate Scam Targeting Out-of-State Property Owners
Local law enforcement is alerting the public to a real estate scam that has surfaced in the area, targeting out-of-state property owners. The Seneca County Sheriff’s Office reports receiving multiple complaints about fraudulent property listings involving unsuspecting real estate brokers.
According to investigators, scammers are posing as property owners and reaching out to real estate agents to list properties for sale. These individuals provide brokers with seemingly legitimate proof of ownership and electronically signed documents. The deception is often discovered when concerned neighbors notify the actual property owners before a fraudulent sale is completed.
A pattern has emerged in which secondary residences or land owned by individuals living outside the state are being targeted. The Sheriff’s Office is collaborating with law enforcement agencies to identify those responsible for the scheme.
Officials urge anyone who believes they may have been affected by this scam to contact the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division at 315-220-3240.
