Seneca County police agencies will take part in a statewide initiative aimed at reducing impaired driving during Super Bowl weekend, according to Sheriff and STOP-DWI Coordinator Timothy J. Thompson, Jr.
The STOP-DWI High Visibility Engagement Campaign will run from February 8 to February 9, 2025. The effort is part of a broader statewide push to raise awareness about the dangers of impaired driving, particularly during high-risk periods such as Super Bowl weekend.
"The Super Bowl is one of the most watched sporting events in the country, but it has also been linked to a rise in impaired driving incidents," Sheriff Thompson stated. "Enjoy the weekend and have fun, but have a plan. Do not regret a bad decision that you could have easily prevented."
This initiative is part of the STOP-DWI program, a statewide effort supported by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee. In addition to Super Bowl weekend, similar enforcement campaigns take place around major holidays and events, including Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and St. Patrick’s Day.
Authorities emphasize that impaired driving is preventable with proper planning. The STOP-DWI program encourages individuals to use designated drivers, rideshare services, or public transportation to ensure safe travel. A mobile app, “Have a Plan,” is available to help individuals find a safe ride home.
