As boating season approaches, the Ontario County Sheriff's Office is offering a New York Safe Boating Course on Saturday, March 15, 2025, at the Ontario County Safety Training Center. The one-day, eight-hour class will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is open to individuals ages 10 and up.
The course, sponsored by the Ontario County Sheriff's Office, aims to educate participants on essential boating safety principles, including rules of navigation, required safety equipment, and responsible boating practices. Those who successfully complete the course will earn a New York Safe Boating Certificate, which is required for many boaters under state law.
Participation in the course is free of charge, and all materials will be provided. However, individuals 18 and older must pay a $10 fee to New York State Parks to obtain their permanent boating safety certificate. Minors under 18 are exempt from this fee.
Interested participants must register in advance, as space is limited. Those who sign up and later decide not to attend are asked to cancel their registration before 5 p.m. on March 14, 2025, to allow others on the waiting list to take their place.
