A routine probation check in the town of Newark led to the discovery of a stolen firearm and the arrest of a local man, according to New York State Police.
Authorities say that on January 27, 2025, at approximately 10:36 a.m., a Wayne County Probation Officer was conducting a standard check at the residence of Gregg M. Pottorff, located at 18 Sweed Road. During the visit, the officer reportedly observed a loaded Hatfield Gun Company single-shot shotgun in plain view.
Further investigation determined that the firearm had been reported stolen from a residence in the village of Newark on August 28, 2020. The Newark Police Department later confirmed its stolen status.
Pottorff was taken into custody by Wayne County Probation and transferred to the custody of New York State Police in Lyons. He has been charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, a misdemeanor, and criminal possession of stolen property in the fourth degree, a class E felony.
Following his arrest, Pottorff was processed at the State Police barracks in Lyons and issued an appearance ticket for Arcadia Town Court on February 19, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. He was released into the custody of Wayne County Probation for further review of his probation status.
Authorities have not released further details on the circumstances surrounding the stolen firearm.
