Ohio Man Ejected Through Sunroof, Two Others Injured in Upstate NY Rollover on I-81
Authorities say the accident occurred around 1:33 p.m. when an Ohio man lost control of his 2024 Volkswagen.
A vehicle rollover on Interstate 81 North in the town of Pamelia on Thursday afternoon left three people injured, including one with serious injuries, according to New York State Police.
Authorities say the accident occurred around 1:33 p.m. when 55-year-old Ahmed Azzam, of Ohio, lost control of his 2024 Volkswagen while traveling northbound. Preliminary investigations indicate that Azzam was driving too fast for the snowy road conditions, causing the vehicle to veer off the east shoulder of the road and overturn. The vehicle came to rest just before a wooded area.
Meryem Azzam, 25, who was seated in the back and not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected through the vehicle's sunroof during the crash. She was taken to Samaritan Medical Center with serious injuries.
The driver, Ahmed Azzam, along with a front passenger identified as 32-year-old Asmaa E. Maaroufi, also from Ohio, were both treated for non-life-threatening injuries and transported to Samaritan Medical Center.
Police confirmed that the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
