New Training Available for First Responders on Lithium-Ion Battery Emergencies
First responders in New York now have access to specialized training on handling lithium-ion battery emergencies. The training, offered through the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (DHSES), aims to equip firefighters and other emergency personnel with the knowledge and skills needed to respond safely to incidents involving these increasingly common power sources.
The program covers a range of topics, including the risks associated with lithium-ion batteries, their construction and storage hazards, and the personal protective equipment (PPE) necessary for safe response. Participants will also receive guidance on how to manage emergencies involving battery storage systems and electric vehicles.
Training is available in two formats: agencies can schedule in-person sessions at their location, or individuals can register for existing courses through the DHSES Learning Management System (LMS). Additional details and registration information can be found at www.dhses.ny.gov/battery-emergencies-and-electrical-storage-systems-training-course.
As the use of lithium-ion batteries continues to grow in consumer electronics, energy storage systems, and electric vehicles, safety officials stress the importance of preparing emergency responders for potential hazards.
