New Book Explores the Emotional Side of Financial Planning
A newly released book by certified financial planner Mary Clements Evans aims to help readers better understand the emotional factors that influence their financial decisions, particularly when it comes to planning for retirement.
Emotionally Invested: Outsmart Your Anxiety for Fearless Retirement Planning, published by Forbes Books, is now available on Amazon. Drawing on more than two decades of experience working with individuals and couples, Evans explores how emotions like fear and anxiety can drive financial choices—often without people realizing it.
At the heart of the book is Evans’ concept of the “Money Why,” a framework that helps readers identify their financial personality. Whether someone is more prone to FOMO (fear of missing out) or FORO (fear of running out), Evans argues that understanding this mindset is key to making healthier, more informed financial decisions.
“This book contains my most important observations from working with more than 500 individuals and families over 20 years,” Evans said. “Knowing your Money Why can change your financial world—and no, I’m not exaggerating.”
The book combines practical advice with personal stories to guide readers through major aspects of financial planning, including how to select a financial advisor, build a comprehensive financial plan, and prepare for unexpected challenges that can disrupt long-term goals. Evans also addresses the spread of financial misinformation online and outlines what she sees as the eight essential components of a strong financial strategy.
With an emphasis on behavioral finance, Evans presents her approach as a more compassionate and personalized alternative to traditional methods, steering clear of overly technical jargon and focusing instead on aligning money habits with personal values.
Evans is the founder and president of Evans Wealth Strategies, based in Emmaus, Pennsylvania, and is affiliated with Raymond James as a registered principal. Prior to launching her firm in 2008, she held leadership roles in corporate finance at companies including Exide Battery, Kellogg’s, and Rodale Publishing. She holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Temple University and has been recognized multiple times by Raymond James for her professional accomplishments.
Published through Forbes Books, a business imprint under Forbes Media, Emotionally Invested is positioned as a resource for readers looking to build not just financial security, but also peace of mind in retirement.
