Naples School Bus Driver Accused of Driving Bus With Rifle Under Driver's Seat
The incident began when NYSP in Canandaigua received a complaint reporting that the bus driver had purchased a .22 caliber rifle and was seen driving away from the retail store in school bus.
A Naples Central School District bus driver was arrested on February 3, 2025, after law enforcement discovered a .22 caliber rifle on a school bus carrying 12 students, according to the New York State Police.
David L. Ferry, 57, of Naples, NY, was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon on School Grounds, a class E felony, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child, a class A misdemeanor.
The incident began when New York State Police in Canandaigua received a complaint reporting that Ferry had purchased a .22 caliber rifle and was seen driving away from the retail store in a Naples Central School District bus. Deputies from the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office located the bus traveling on State Route 247 in the town of Gorham and conducted a traffic stop at the request of the State Police.
Upon inspection, officers found the bus occupied by 12 students. The rifle, still in its original packaging and without ammunition, was secured under a seat. Naples Central School officials were notified and responded to the scene.
Authorities emphasized that there is no indication Ferry intended to commit an act of violence, and no credible threats have been identified against Naples Central School, its students, or staff.
Ferry was processed at the State Police barracks in Canandaigua and issued appearance tickets for Gorham Town Court. He is scheduled to appear on February 18, 2025, at 5:30 p.m.
