Man Shot by Police in Olean After Pointing BB Gun at Officers
A 23-year-old Olean man is in guarded condition following an officer-involved shooting early Wednesday morning.
According to the New York State Police, troopers responded to a report of a suicidal individual on North 7th Street in Olean at approximately 12:47 a.m. Upon arrival, officers encountered Thomas A. Wright, who was walking along the sidewalk.
Authorities say that as troopers attempted to engage with Wright, he pointed what appeared to be a black handgun at them. In response, three officers fired their weapons, striking him multiple times.
Emergency medical aid was administered at the scene by both State Police and Olean Police Department personnel. Wright was transported to Olean General Hospital before being transferred to Erie County Medical Center, where he remains under medical care.
Investigators later determined that the weapon Wright brandished was a BB gun, which was recovered at the scene.
The incident remains under investigation, and police have indicated that charges against Wright are pending.
State Police Troop A Commander, Major Amie Feroleto, is scheduled to hold a press conference regarding the incident at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. Updates will follow.
