Lyons senior Jayla Bell has etched her name in the school’s history books, becoming the program’s all-time leading scorer and recently reaching the 2,000-point milestone in a game against North Rose-Wolcott on Feb. 5. The achievement places Bell among an elite group of players in Section V, further solidifying her impact on the court.
Bell’s basketball journey began at an early age, inspired by her parents, both former Lyons players. She credits her mother, Lakeshia Blaisdell—who was recently inducted into the Lyons Lions Athletic Hall of Fame—as a significant influence on her development as a player. Support from her family, particularly her grandmother, has played a crucial role in her success, from community center teams to AAU competition.
While individual accomplishments have been noteworthy, Bell has remained focused on a larger goal: bringing a Section V title to Lyons. She attributes much of her growth to the support of her teammates and guidance from head coach Richard Hill. For Bell, personal milestones are meaningful, but winning a championship alongside her team is what she values most.
Beyond basketball, Bell is a three-sport athlete with a variety of interests. She enjoys school, writing, and reading mystery novels, and she balances her athletic commitments with work at Wegmans and the L.Y.O.N.S. Summer Program. As the oldest sibling in her family, she also embraces being a role model, particularly for her younger sister, Ja’Niyah, who is following in her footsteps on the court.
Looking ahead, Bell plans to continue her basketball career at the collegiate level while exploring opportunities beyond athletics. Though she has made history at Lyons, she remains focused on the future, hoping to inspire the next generation of players.
"Records are meant to be broken," Bell said. "I’ll be cheering when the next player surpasses mine.”
