Local Fire Departments Launch ‘Hydrant Helpers’ Program to Encourage Community Involvement
The Hydrant Helpers program encourages students to assist in keeping fire hydrants clear of snow and debris, ensuring faster access for firefighters in the event of an emergency.
Local fire districts are inviting local students and community members to participate in a new initiative aimed at improving fire safety during the winter months. The Hydrant Helpers program encourages students to assist in keeping fire hydrants clear of snow and debris, ensuring faster access for firefighters in the event of an emergency.
With modern building materials and home furnishings often containing more flammable petrochemicals, fires can spread more quickly than in the past. Firefighters emphasize that having immediate access to water can be critical in preventing severe property damage and saving lives.
To participate, students are encouraged to work with an adult to safely clear hydrants in their neighborhood throughout the winter. Those who submit proof of clearing a hydrant at least three times during the season will receive a Hydrant Helpers Patch and Certificate in recognition of their service.
Participants can document their efforts by submitting an online form and sharing updates or photos on the Facebook pages of local fire departments, including Lincoln, Ontario, Walworth, and West Walworth. Submissions can also be sent via email to ffbob@rochester.rr.com.
At the end of the season, patches and certificates will be awarded to acknowledge the community’s contributions to fire safety. The Lincoln Fire Department, a member of the Fire Departments of Wayne Central (FDWC), supports the initiative as part of its ongoing commitment to public safety.
