Lake Effect Snow Warning Issued for Wayne County; Heavy Snow Expected Through Wednesday
A Lake Effect Snow Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Buffalo, New York, in effect from 1 a.m. Monday through 6 a.m. Wednesday. Prior to the warning, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in place until 1 a.m. Monday due to mixed precipitation. Forecasters warn of additional snow and sleet accumulations between 2 to 5 inches, along with ice accumulations of around three-tenths of an inch. Gusty winds are expected to reach up to 45 miles per hour, which could lead to hazardous conditions on the roads.
During the Lake Effect Snow Warning, heavy lake effect snow is anticipated, with total snowfall ranging from 10 to 21 inches in the most persistent bands. Winds may gust as high as 50 miles per hour on Monday and into Monday night, creating blowing and drifting snow. These conditions are expected to reduce visibility to less than a quarter mile at times, making travel dangerous and possibly leading to near-whiteout conditions.
In addition to the snowfall, power outages and tree damage are possible due to the combination of ice and strong winds. Travel may be particularly difficult on bridges and overpasses, which are prone to becoming especially slick. Drivers are urged to use caution, reduce speed, and be prepared for rapidly changing road conditions.
The NWS advises that heavy snow will fall in relatively narrow bands, meaning conditions could change quickly. Those who must travel should remain alert and expect limited visibility and slippery roads. Snow and ice reports can be submitted through the NWS website or via social media platforms.
