Jefferson County Woman Arrested for Alleged Use of Fraudulent License Plates
Police say the vehicle’s license plates appeared to be fraudulent, and further investigation confirmed they had been printed from an online source and illegally affixed to the car.
A traffic stop in Jefferson County led to the arrest of an Evans Mills woman after authorities discovered her vehicle had fraudulent license plates, according to New York State Police.
On February 19, 2025, at approximately 10:47 a.m., state troopers conducted a stop on a 2020 Mercedes Benz on Johnson Road in the town of LeRay. Police say the vehicle’s license plates appeared to be fraudulent, and further investigation confirmed they had been printed from an online source and illegally affixed to the car.
Authorities determined that the vehicle’s registration had been suspended due to an insurance lapse, and the plates had been surrendered to the Department of Motor Vehicles.
The driver, identified as 29-year-old Shanique S. Coley of Evans Mills, was arrested and charged with possession of a forged instrument, a class D felony. She was also issued multiple traffic tickets, including for no license plate and suspended registration.
Coley was arraigned in Watertown City Court and later released to Fort Drum Military Police. She is scheduled to appear in LeRay Court on February 26, 2025, at 11:00 a.m.
