Honoring Harold “Butch” Brentnall: Lyons Remembers a True Local Hero

The community is mourning the loss of Harold J. “Butch” Brentnall Jr., who passed away at the age of 82 on Monday, March 10, 2025, at Newark-Wayne Community Hospital.
A visitation for friends and family will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 20, 2025, at Weeks-Keysor Funeral Home, located at 5 Phelps St., Lyons. The Lyons Fire Department will hold a special visitation at 6:30 p.m. A funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Friday, March 21, 2025, at Lyons United Methodist Church, 93 William St.
Brentnall, originally from Tuxedo, N.Y., was born on September 11, 1942, to Harold Brentnall Sr. and Helen Billy Brentnall. After graduating from high school in 1960, he worked in manufacturing before transitioning to a position at the local post office, where he also served as a part-time officer for the Tuxedo Police Department.
In 1975, Brentnall moved to Lyons, where he held various roles in the community. He worked for the South Lyons Cemetery, was a farmhand at Ganz Farm, was employed at Wayne Feeds, served as an emergency dispatcher for Wayne County when it was based at the Lyons Fire Department, and later retired from the Lyons Water Department.
Well known for his passion for trains and railroad history, Brentnall was an active member of the Erie Lackawanna Historical Society. He was also an avid reader, particularly enjoying mystery novels and books about trains.
Brentnall is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sandra; his daughter, Karen Furman; two sons, Darrin Brentnall (Lynette DeSanctis) and Adam Brentnall; as well as three grandchildren, Lily Brentnall, Casey Brentnall, and Jude Brentnall.
