Happening Now: Custodian Found Dead in Syracuse High School Cafeteria, Investigation Underway
Five cafeteria employees working with the dining service provider were transported to a local hospital with reported carbon monoxide poisoning symptoms.

The Syracuse Academy of Science High School is the center of a tragic and unfolding investigation after a staff member discovered a custodian deceased in the cafeteria early Tuesday morning.
In response to the incident, the charter school promptly evacuated the building and dismissed students and staff early to ensure their safety and allow authorities to investigate thoroughly. "The safety and well-being of our students and staff are our highest priorities, and we are taking all necessary steps to address this situation,” the school’s spokesperson stated in a prepared release.
Following the discovery, five cafeteria employees working with the dining service provider Chartwells were transported to a local hospital. The Syracuse Fire Department confirmed these individuals exhibited symptoms consistent with mild to moderate carbon monoxide poisoning.
Law enforcement and emergency services remain on the scene, investigating the cause of the incident. The school, located on Park Avenue, will remain closed until further notice.
