Free Car Seat Safety Check Event to Be Held in Onondaga County
Onondaga County residents will have an opportunity to ensure their children's car seats are properly installed at a free car seat check event later this month. The event is scheduled for Sunday, March 23, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Onondaga Hill Fire Department, located at 4831 Velasko Road in Syracuse.
The safety initiative is a collaboration between the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office, New York State Police, and the Onondaga Hill Fire Department. Certified technicians will be available to inspect car seats, offer guidance on proper installation, and ensure children are securely fastened for travel.
Parents and caregivers are encouraged to install the car seat in their vehicle prior to arriving at the event. If possible, children should also be present so technicians can assess the fit and make any necessary adjustments. No appointment is required—attendees can stop by anytime during event hours.
Car seat safety checks are an important measure to reduce the risk of injury in the event of a crash. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), nearly half of all car seats are installed incorrectly, which can compromise their effectiveness. Events like this aim to educate families and enhance road safety for young passengers.
For more information about child passenger safety guidelines, residents can visit local law enforcement agencies' websites or consult resources from the NHTSA.
