Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor Seeks Volunteers to Maintain Water Trail
The stewardship program, supported by the New York State Canal Corporation, aims to keep the water trail safe, clean, and accessible.
The Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor is calling on paddlers and outdoor enthusiasts to join its Water Trail Stewardship Program for the 2025 season. The initiative encourages volunteers to help maintain and monitor sections of the 450-mile New York State Canalway Water Trail, which includes the Erie, Cayuga-Seneca, Champlain, and Oswego canals.
The stewardship program, supported by the New York State Canal Corporation, aims to keep the water trail safe, clean, and accessible. Volunteers, including individuals, families, and community groups, can adopt a section of the trail approximately 10 miles in length. Their responsibilities will include monitoring conditions, removing litter, and engaging with trail users.
Stewards will be expected to visit their designated section at least twice a month from May 1 to October 31, dedicating four to six hours per visit. Key duties include:
Collecting litter, trimming vegetation, and clearing minor debris.
Reporting damage, environmental concerns, and invasive species sightings.
Serving as ambassadors by assisting paddlers and promoting safe and responsible use of the trail.
Volunteers must be at least 12 years old, with adult supervision required for those under 18. An online orientation will be provided to all participants, and stewards will receive program-branded apparel and supplies, though they are expected to bring their own tools.
Applications for new stewards are open until July 1. Interested individuals can submit an interest form through the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor website. Once submitted, applicants will receive further details, including registration instructions and orientation requirements.
For more information or to inquire about specific sections of the water trail, prospective volunteers can contact Mona Caron, Director of Trails and Stewardship, at mona_caron@eriecanalway.org or (518) 237-7000, ext. 204.
This initiative offers an opportunity for local residents to take an active role in preserving and enhancing one of New York’s historic waterways while enjoying time outdoors.
