Emergency Crews Respond to Vehicle Crash into Icy Pond in Galen

Emergency responders worked swiftly to rescue a driver trapped in a submerged vehicle after a crash on an icy roadway in Galen on Thursday, January 24.
According to the Clyde Fire Department, crews were initially dispatched for a personal injury motor vehicle accident involving a car that had gone off the road and into a pond, trapping one occupant inside.
While en route, dispatchers relayed updated information that the driver was still inside the sinking vehicle, with only their head above water, before losing contact with the individual.
Car 2-2 was the first unit to arrive on the scene and confirmed that the vehicle had gone down an embankment and was fully submerged through the ice. However, by the time additional emergency crews arrived, the driver had already been successfully extricated and was in the care of EMS.
Wayne County EMS transported the patient to the hospital for treatment. Authorities have not released details on the individual's condition.
Due to the icy conditions, the weight of the waterlogged vehicle, and its difficult position in the pond, recovery efforts took considerable time and effort. Crews from the Clyde Fire Department, Tyre Fire Department, and multiple towing services worked together to retrieve the car.
Responding agencies included the Clyde Fire Department, Tyre Fire Department, Wayne County EMS, Wayne County Sheriff's Office, New York State Police, and the Town of Galen. Fetherly’s Wrecking and Pacello’s Towing assisted with the vehicle recovery.
Authorities continue to remind drivers to use caution on winter roads as icy conditions can make travel treacherous.
