Federal immigration enforcement has reached Geneva following reports of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents being present in the area over the weekend.
Rochester city officials, including Rochester City Council President Miguel Meléndez, acknowledged the agency’s presence, stating, "They were looking for very specific people at very specific locations. There was also a visit to Geneva schools that occurred, so I believe this is very real."
Rochester Mayor Malik Evans also confirmed the presence of immigration enforcement officers. "I was made aware that ICE agents were in the region yesterday, both in the city and in the county. However, we have not received any information regarding the outcomes of these operations," Evans said. He further clarified that the city of Rochester does not assist in any actions conducted by ICE.
The extent and objectives of ICE’s operations in Geneva remain unclear. However, local leaders are advising community members to stay informed and understand their rights.
This story is developing. Further updates are expected from our reporters canvassing the Geneva area today.
The New York Immigration Coalition and the American Civil Liberties Union are available to assist individuals affected by these enforcement actions.
