A barn on Prosser Road in the Town of Jerusalem was destroyed by fire Thursday afternoon, according to the Yates County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies and multiple fire departments responded to the scene around 12:24 p.m. after a delivery worker, arriving at the property, saw the structure engulfed in flames and contacted authorities. No one was on the property at the time.
Firefighters from Branchport, Himrod, Benton, Potter, Penn Yan, and Pulteney, along with Yates County Emergency Management and Yates County Ambulance, worked to contain the blaze. Despite their efforts, the barn was deemed a total loss.
An initial investigation suggests the fire may have been caused by a wood stove or an electrical issue, though an official determination has not been made.
Deputy S. Spaulding of the Yates County Sheriff’s Office was the responding officer.
No injuries were reported, and officials have not indicated any foul play.
