Auburn Correctional Inmate Found Unresponsive in Cell, Dies Despite Medical Efforts
This incident also comes amidst an ongoing investigation into the death of Robert Brooks, which was ruled a homicide at the hands of DOCCS Officers.
An inmate at Auburn Correctional Facility was discovered unresponsive in his cell Saturday morning, according to the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS).
Prison staff, a member of the National Guard, and emergency medical personnel attempted to revive 61-year-old Jonathan Grant using CPR and Narcan, but their efforts were unsuccessful. A paramedic ultimately pronounced him dead at the scene.
Grant had been incarcerated since August 2011, serving a sentence of 34 to 40 years for first-degree rape and burglary in Kings County. Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
State police and the DOCCS Office of Special Investigations routinely examine deaths that appear unnatural or unrelated to pre-existing medical conditions. Additionally, the State Commission of Correction reviews all fatalities that occur within state correctional facilities.
Grant’s death comes amid ongoing strikes by prison workers at Auburn, Cayuga, and Five Points Correctional Facilities, as well as other locations across New York. The strike, which began last Tuesday, has drawn attention to working conditions within the state’s correctional system. This incident also comes amidst an ongoing investigation into the death of Robert Brooks, which was ruled a homicide at the hands of DOCCS Officers.
