Attorney General Warns New Yorkers of Scams Amid Los Angeles Wildfire Relief Efforts
"Scammers often take advantage of generous acts in exchange for personal gain”, said New York State Attorney General Leticia James.
In response to the ongoing wildfires devastating the greater Los Angeles area, New York Attorney General Letitia James has issued a warning to New Yorkers to be vigilant against fraudulent charities exploiting their generosity. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is providing tips to ensure that donations go to legitimate organizations and not into the hands of scammers.
“In the midst of terrible natural disasters such as the wildfires impacting the greater Los Angeles area, scammers often take advantage of generous acts in exchange for personal gain,” said Attorney General James. “While it is inspiring to see so many New Yorkers eager to help, I encourage them to be cautious of sham charities that prey on people’s generosity and ensure that they are giving to trustworthy organizations and groups.”
Tips for Safe Donations:
Verify Email Solicitors
If solicited by email, confirm the legitimacy of the sender by contacting the charity directly or visiting its official website. Avoid sharing personal or credit card information unless you have verified the email’s authenticity.Scrutinize Social Media Campaigns
Research fundraising organizers on social media and crowdfunding platforms. Ensure they are legitimate and associated with trusted organizations. Check platform policies to understand any fees or risks involved.Check Charity Credentials
Donate to familiar charities or consult resources like the Center for Disaster Philanthropy for vetted organizations. New York charities must register with OAG’s Charities Bureau, where financial reports are accessible for review.Understand Donation Use
Ask charities how your donation will be used, including details about the programs and services it will support. Be cautious of organizations with high administrative costs relative to their mission spending.Investigate New Organizations
Be wary of newly formed groups that may lack the infrastructure or experience to effectively deliver aid, and research their background thoroughly.Verify Text Donation Requests
Confirm with charities directly before donating via text to ensure legitimacy.Avoid Cash Donations
Make checks payable to the charity or donate via the organization’s official website.Protect Personal Information
Only share credit card or personal information with well-known organizations and ensure that online campaigns are verified.
Reporting Suspected Scams
New Yorkers who suspect fraudulent activity or misrepresentation by charitable organizations are encouraged to report concerns to the OAG’s Charities Bureau by calling 212-416-8401 or filing a complaint online.
As the wildfires continue to cause destruction, Attorney General James emphasized the importance of informed giving. “We will continue to do everything we can to support victims of this terrible tragedy,” she said. “Stay cautious and give wisely.”
